Great sadness at the Val-de-Travers Steam Railway

During the night of 15th/16th December 2001, the station at St.Sulpice fell victim to flames. Everything was entirely destroyed. The inquiry was able to determine that the fire started in the boiler room ceiling. The cost of the damage has risen to more than hundreds of thousands of francs.

The locomotives and carriages, stationed close by, were untouched by this disaster.

The restaurant, the kitchen, the changing rooms, the office and it's equipment, the toilets, as well as restoration materials and stocks for the sales stand all went up in smoke. The technical archives, which were soon to move to a fire-proof area currently under construction, were also annihilated.

During the last 4 years, the VVT has invested nearly 40,000 Swiss Francs in this building. A gas boiler had been installed and all the doors and windows had been renewed. To improve the welcome to visitors other work had been undertaken.

The 2002 season was not affected by this catastrophe.
The first train of the season ran on Saturday the 2nd February 2002 on the route St.Sulpice - Neuchatel - Les Verrieres - Travers - St.Sulpice.

We are completely voluntary and launched an appeal for all the good souls who wished to come and help us in any way they could.

If anyone possesses plans or copies of steam documents which might interest us, they would be very welcome.

Persons who prefer to help us by donations can make them to CCP 34-166542-4 mentioning "soutien incendie" (fire fund).

For all information, contact us by e-mail or on the telephone number +41 XX XXX XX XX. On this number leave us a message or a fax and we will return your call.

We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have offered us help, no matter how small.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and we look forwards to finding you at St.Sulpice on Saturday 11th May 2002 at 13:43 for the start of the 2002 season.

                                                                  The secretary, Christian Jacquier
